From the Hawarden Independent, December 19, 1929:

HEART ATTACK PROVES FATAL
Wm. Vanderven Passed Away Last Friday Morning
Death Came at Home of His Daughter, Mrs. Fred Koopmans—Funeral at Rock Valley Monday

William Vanderven passed away at 5 o'clock last Friday morning at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Fred Koopmans, death being due to heart trouble. Mr. Vanderven had not been in the best of health but his condition was not regarded as serious until early Friday morning when he was stricken with a severe heart attack. He was up until midnight conversing with guests at the Koopmans home but when he became ill it was known that his condition was critical and his children were called to his bedside.

Funeral services were held at 12 o'clock Monday at the Fred Koopmans home and at 2:00 p.m. at the Dutch Reformed church at Rock Valley. Interment was made in the family plot in the Rock Valley cemetery.

William Vanderven was born in Holland, March 11, 1860, and passed away Dec. 13, 1929, at the age of 69 years, 9 months and 2 days. He came to America a number of years ago and located in Kansas and later he moved to Rock Valley. He learned the tailor trade in his native country and he followed it for his occupation. Following the death of his wife three or four years ago he sold his home in Rock Valley and has since lived with his children. He is survived by five children, one son, Henry Vanderven of Ireton, and four daughters, Mrs. Fred Koopmans, and Mrs. Dick Heunink of Hawarden; Mrs. James Herweyer of Sioux Center and Mrs. Gerrit Van Oort of Hudson.

Wm. Vander Ven Died at Home of Daughter

Wm. Vander Ven, a former resident of Rock Valley, died suddenly last Friday at the home of his daughter near Sioux Center, and the remains were brought here for funeral services and burial. The services were held Monday afternoon in the Christian Reformed church.

Mr. Vander Ven lived in Rock Valley for several years and conducted a tailor shop here. After the death of his wife a few years ago, he discontinued the tailor business and since that time had made his home with his children. He was a man of kind and friendly disposition, and he made friends of all who knew him.

He is survived by one son and four daughters, Henry Vander Ven, who lives near Craig, Iowa; Mrs. Anna Koopmans, Mrs. Hendrike Herewyger, Mrs. Hattie Hunning and Mrs. Agnes Van Noort, all living in Ireton and Sioux Center vicinity.

From the Alton Democrat, December 20, 1929, Rock Valley news:

Wm. Vande[sic] Ven who for many years has been in the tailoring business in Rock Valley and used to operate a tailor shop here was found dead in bed at Sioux Center Friday morning, Dec. 13. Funeral services were held at the Christian Ref. church, Rock Valley, Monday afternoon, conducted by Rev. J. Gritters, pastor. Interment took place in Valley View cemetery.

The Sioux County Cemetery Index gives his birth year as 1861. FindaGrave.com confirms this year with a photo of his headstone.

The 1925 Iowa state census gives his age as 64, born in the Netherlands, parents Henry Vander Ven and Henetta[?] Emmet[?]; wife Margaret Vander Ven, age 67, born in the Netherlands, parents John Van Sloten and [illegible] Riem[?]

His death certificate gives his birth date as March 11, 1860 in Holland; resident in the U.S. 38 years; parents Henry Vanderven and Henrietta Emerick; informant, his son Henry; died at 10 a.m. December 13, 1929, of angina pectoris.
