G. Van de Stouwe Died Last Saturday Night

The community was shocked last Sunday morning to hear the announcement that Mr. G. VandeStouwe, Sr., one of the old, respected citizens of this vicinity, had passed away very suddenly, after only a few days of illness.

The funeral was held Tuesday from the family home west of Hull and from the First Reformed church, Rev. G. H. Douwstra officiating and the remains were laid to rest in Hope cemetery. An obituary will be published next week. The Index joins the many friends of the surviving relatives in extending sincere sympathy.

Obituary of the Late Mr. G. Van de Stouwe, Sr.

Mr. G. VandeStouwe, Sr., who died Sunday morning, December 8th, and was buried in the family lot in Hope Cemetery Tuesday afternoon, December 10th, was born March 1st., 1856, being at the time of his death nearly seventy-four years old.

He grew to manhood in the old country and in March 1876 was married to Miss Hattie VandeBerg. The family emigrated to America in 1878, settling first in New Jersey. In the year 1886 they came to Sioux county and here he continued to reside until his death.

The married life of Mr. and Mrs. VandeStouwe which was terminated on the death of Mrs. VandeStouwe in May, 1928, was blessed with eleven children, two of whom are deceased, as follows: Mrs. Alice VanderBerg of Sioux Center; Mrs. Gertie Vander Schaaf of Orange City, twins; Wm. VanderStouwe[sic?], Rock Valley; Mrs. Cora VandeStoep, Orange City; John VandeStouwe of Hull; Mrs. Mary Heusinkveld, deceased; Bert VandeStouwe of Hull; Jake VandeStouwe, deceased; Henry VandeStouwe of Whiting; Alfred VandeStouwe of George; Gerrit VandeStouwe, Jr., of Hull. There are also twenty-five grand children and four great grand children.

A brief notice in the Alton Democrat, December 13, 1929, Hull news (spelling his surname Vander Stouwe) says he had been in poor health for a long time and the past week had been very sick.

His death certificate (spelling his surname Vande Stouwe) shows him born March 1, 1856 in Holland; parents William Vande Stouwe and Alice Van Den Huevel; resident of the United States 49 years and of Hull 23 years; occupation, farmer, for 49 years, last worked at this occupation 3 months ago; died at 7 a.m. December 8, 1929; cause of death, hemorrhage, contributory cause, gastric ulcer; the doctor had been treating him since October 1, 1929.

FindaGrave.com has him born at Doornspijk, Elburg Municipality, Gelderland, Netherlands. It lists his wife, Harmpje Van Den Berg Van Der Stouwe (see her obituary, posted separately, surname VandeStouwe), and their 11 children. It gives Van Der Stouwe as the surname for him, his wife, and two of their children, and Vande Stouwe as the surname for the other nine children.

The Sioux County Cemetery Index spells their surname Vande Stouwe.
