From the Alton Democrat, September 7, 1928, Rock Valley news:

On Friday morning, August 31st, occurred the death of another pioneer resident of this community, when Wm. Doherty passed away at the age of 67 years, at the home of his nephew, Frank O’Meara, in Rock Valley. The deceased assisted in building the first Catholic church in Rock Valley in the early eighties. He was a bachelor and is survived by one brother, James of Metaline Falls, Wash. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews, most of whom live in this vicinity. Funeral services were held Monday in St. Mary’s church, Rev. J. J. O’Rielly officiating. Burial took place in Saint Mary’s Catholic cemetery.

His death certificate gives his birth date as August 31 [year missing], age 66 years 5 months 16 days; born in New York, resident of Rock Valley 35 years; parents James Doherty and Mary Daley, both born in Ireland; died at 9:30 a.m. August 31, 1928; cause, angina pectoris, duration 1 day; contributory cause myocarditis (chronic) and “cirroseis”[?] [cirrhosis?] of liver, duration several years.
