This community was grieved Saturday to learn of the death of Mr. Nicholas Jungers who died that morning at 6:20 A.M. at the Sacred Heart Hospital at Le Mars, aged 76 years, 6 months and 9 days.

Mr. Jungers had been ailing for about a year past and the last half he had been practically confined to his bed. His trouble seemed to be just a general decline or anemia. He was given the best of care and a number of blood transfusions were resorted to in an attempt to restore him to health.

Nicholas Jungers was born on February 18, 1851 in Sheboygan County, Wisconsin. On February 3, 1875, he was married to Miss Magdelene Sanem at Decade, Wisconsin. That same year they moved to Iowa and homesteaded on a farm northwest of Hospers, now occupied by their son Joe Jungers.

To this union eleven children were born. Of these two preceded their father in death: Mary, who died when about 10 years old, and Peter R. who died in 1911. Those living are: Lewis and John W. of Hospers; Mrs. J.R. Weise of Geneva, Nebraska; Dominic N. of Hospers; Mrs. Ed Heitzman of Shakopee, Minnesota; Mrs. P.C. Weise of Shickley, Nebraska; Sister M. Bernise of Portland, Oregon; and Joseph and Edward L. of Hospers. Besides these children he is survived by his brothers and sisters, he being the first of his family to die. They are Lewis of Sheldon; Dominic and John N. of Hospers; Mrs. Mary Ludowese of Fairfax, Minnesota; Mrs. Nick Croat of Alton; and Peter of Willowdale, Kansas.

Mrs. Jungers died October 29, 1904.

Mr. Jungers was one of the early settlers of this vicinity and devoted his energies to farming of which he made a substantial success. He was a member of St. Anthony’s Church of which he was for several years one of the trustees. He was also school director of the Hospers Public School for some time. Of late years he was a stockholder and one of the directors of the Hospers Savings Bank.

All the children were here for the funeral, except Sister M. Bernise who had been with him at the hospital for several months and had left only a short time before he died. His brothers and sisters were also present except Peter Youngers of Willowdale, Kansas, who had visited him a few weeks ago. Other relatives here from a distance were Frank Sanem and Mrs. John Lelder of Howard, South Dakota, and Louis Sanem of Oldham, South Dakota. These being sister and brother-in-law.

The funeral was held Tuesday morning at 9:30 at St. Anthony’s Church and was attended by relatives and friends of Hospers and vicinity and from neighboring towns. The stores were closed during the funeral services. The service was a solemn Requiem Mass. Reverend A.J. Nuel was celebrant; Very Reverend F.J. Brune of Alton, deacon; Reverend J.H. Geling of Le Mars, sub-deacon; and Reverend P. Sturm of Granville, master of ceremonies. The sermon was preached by Father Brune. Father Geling, an old friend of the deceased conducted the service at the grave.
