NOTE of Interest in the Alton Democrat of July 22, 1911 Twenty years ago 1891. Fritz Vanden Burg of Alton, who had celebrated the 4th of July at Orange City, failed to return home Hundreds of Alton and Orange City people searched the country for miles in all directions the next day but failed to find the old gentleman who was 70 years of age About a week later he was found at Hornick, below Sioux City, where he had wandered in a temporary fit of insanity is almost the worst thing for consumptives
Alton Democrat July 11, 1891
Mysterious Disappearance , Mr. Fritz Van den Burg residing near this place, celebrated the 4th of July at Orange City, and his friends saw him for the last time at 6 o'clock in the evening, slowly walking along the streets. Not much alarm was felt until Sunday and hundreds of Orange City and Alton people search ed the whole country for miles in all directions. His description was published and Monday the mayor of Orange City received a telegram stating that an old man answering his description was seen at James, near Sioux City, on Sunday. John, his son, at once went to James, traced the man to Leeds and Sioux City, but up the hour of going to press has not found him. Even if the man is found in Sioux City it is not certain that he is Mr. Van den Burg, although the people of James and Leeds who saw him describe him exactly. The old gentleman is over 70 year of age, and pretty spry, wears a beard almost white, is very polite and courteous, cannot speak English, and invariable has a cane. It is said he has been worrying about financial matters and many think he has committed suicide, although the majority of the people are inclined to the belief that he is temporarily insane and wandered off. THE DEMOCRAT hopes he will be speedily and safely found.
