Van Vooren, Charles Sr. 1877-1962 and Ida De Coeyer Family

This story was taken from page 175 of the Rock Valley St. Mary’s Catholic Church Book written for the centennial of the church in about 1982(?). The story was transcribed for this BIOS by Beth De Leeuw of the Greater Sioux County Genealogical Society. Some research notes were added.

CHARLES VAN VOOREN SR. was born in Biervliet, Holland in 1877. He met IDA DE COEYER, who was born in St. Laureirns, Belgium in 1887. Although they lived in separate countries of Europe, their towns were near the border and they became acquainted over there.

Charles came to America first and Ida followed later. They were married on April 21, 1914 in St. Mary’s Church in Rock Valley. They always farmed six miles west and one-half mile south of Rock Valley until moving to town when they retired.

Charles Sr. died on June 22, 1962 and his wife, Ida, died on December 31, 1975. Both are buried in St. Mary’s Cemetery.

During this marriage, five children were born; Louise, Mary, Charles Jr., Aileen and Margaret.

1. LOUISE (VAN VOOREN) BAATZ (see Matt Baatz Family in the church book)
They had five children

2. MARY VAN VOOREN was born on February 14, 1917. She was married to George Tucker who was a Marine Sergeant. He was killed in action at Iwo Jima. She later married Bas Lems and moved to California.

3. CHARLES VAN VOOREN, JR. was born October 21, 1919. He married Marie Dieterman from Ward, South Dakota on January 9, 1945 in Elkton, South Dakota. Marie died in January of 1974. Charles lives at 1437 11th Street in Rock Valley.
During their marriage, Charles and Marie had two children, Vicky Rose and Dianne Mary.
Vicky Rose was born on March 28, 1950. She attended and graduated from Rock Valley Community High School. On October 24, 1970, she married Gary Warner from Hudson, South Dakota. They now reside on a farm outside of Hudson.
Diane Mary was born June 6, 1953. She attended and graduated from Rock Valley Community High School. She married Randy Vander Velde of Rock Valley on June 16, 1971. They left Rock Valley in 1972. At that time, Randy was in the Army and stationed in Germany for 18 months. They are now living in Wayne, Nebraska. They have one child, Tera, seven years old and expecting a second in June.

4. AILEEN (VAN VOOREN) BLAWET was born February 18, 1922. She married Albert Blawet in June of 1946 at St. Mary’s and now lives in Larchwood.

5. MARGARET (VAN VOOREN) HEVERN (see Boniface Hevern in the church book )

Charles Hieronijmus Van Vooren was born 27 Jul 1877 died 23 June 1962 Sioux Falls SD, buried in St. Mary’s Cemetery Rock Valley IA. He was the son of Carolus Ludvicus /Charles Louis Van Vooren 1841-1909 and Maria Carolina De Causmaecker. He married Ida De Coeyer born 15 April 1887 and died 31 December 1975 Rock Valley IA. Her parents were not listed.

Funeral services for Charles Van Vooren, Sr., 84, were held Wednesday, June 27, at 10 a.m. in St. Mary's Catholic church at Rock Valley. Mr. Van Vooren died Saturday night, June 23, at a Sioux Falls hospital after a brief illness. Rev. Ralph Reinhart officiated. Burial was in the church cemetery. The rosary was recited Tuesday evening at the Porter Funeral home.
Mr. Van Vooren was born July 27, 1877, at Biersliet, the Netherlands. He came to America in March, 1902. He married Ida De Coeyer in April, 1914. He farmed in the Rock Valley vicinity before retiring and moving to Rock Valley in 1945.
Survivors are the widow, Ida, four daughters, Louise (Mrs. Mat Baatz) of Hudson, S.D.; Mary (Mrs. Bastian Lems) of Lakewood, Calif.; Margaret (Mrs. Willie Hevern) of Rock Valley, Charles Van Vooren, jr., of Rock Valley, and Aileen (Mrs. Albert Blauwet) of Larchwood, Iowa; 22 grandchildren and one great grandchild.

Similar obituaries were published in the Rock Valley Bee (July 5, 1962) and the Alton Democrat (July 5, 1962).
The Rock Valley Bee obit adds as survivors two brothers, Ben of Larchwood and Peter of the Netherlands. It also provides a long list of out of town relatives and friends attending the funeral.
The Alton Democrat obit includes the names of the pallbearers: Francis McNamara, Vincent McNamara, Hein Kosters, John Cullinan, Tom McGill, and Walter McNamara.

OBITUARY OF IDA VAN VOOREN
Funeral services were held at St. Mary Catholic Church in Rock Valley at 10:30 A.M., January 3, for Mrs. Charles Van Vooren, 88, of Rock Valley, who died December 31 at Hegg Memorial Hospital in Rock Valley after a long illness.
Services were conducted by the Rev. Patrick Nooney and burial was in Rock Valley cemetery.
Mrs. Van Voorne, the former Ida DeCoyer, was born April 15, 1887, in Belgium.
Her fiance went to Belgium in 1914 to bring her to the U.S. and they were married at Rock Valley April 21, 1914. Mr. Van Vooren died June 22, 1962.
Survivors include a son, Charles, of Rock Valley; four daughters, Mrs. Matt (Louise) Baatz and Mrs. Willie (Margaret) Heveren, both of Rock Valley; Mrs. Bastian (Mary) Lems of Lakewood, Calif., and Mrs. Albert (Aileen) Blauwet of Larchwood; 22 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren.
