Education: Graduated from Abraham Lincoln High School, Council Bluffs, IA; after completing his military service, Martin enrolled at Creighton University, Omaha, NE. and graduated in May 1958.

Religious affiliation: Was very active at St. Michael's Catholic Parish, Harlan, IA; It was his service on the Diocesan Pastoral Council that enabled Martin and his family to receive communion from then-Pope John Paul ll at the Living History Farms in Des Moines, IA in 1979.

Military service: Enlisted in the U. S. Navy and was on the ship USS Amphion (AR-13). Honorably discharged.

Marriage: Mary Jane Jacobsen; Sep. 2, 1957; location not provided

Employment: After completing his college degree, he and Mary Jane moved to Mount Pleasant, IA, where he began his pharmacy career. He and Mary Jane and their growing family moved to Harlan, IA in 1960 to take over Pexton Drug Store, where he enjoyed serving his customers for more than 30 years.

Hobbies/Interests: He worked on the fundraising and planning committee for the JJ Jensen Ballpark which helped bring that outstanding facility to Harlan. He worked on a nondenominational committee that helped bring 2 Cambodian refugee families to America to start a new life in Harlan; Martin became a surrogate father to the Taing and Hong families. He served as a volunteer for the American Red Cross which took him around the country, serving those affected by disasters, including 2 trips to Ground Zero in New York after the 9/11 attacks. Martin also coached, cheered, and gave drug talks to churches and schools. Martin was his children’s' biggest cheerleader. He played golf in his younger years, then took up tennis; loved the family snow skiing vacations and the Canadian fishing trips; loved a good game of cards; there was always a jigsaw puzzle on the dining room table
