Education: Attended Harlan, IA schools and graduated from Harlan High School with the Class of 1947; he then went to State University of Iowa, Iowa City, IA. While there, he was an ROTC student, played on the freshman basketball team and was a member of Alpha Tau Omega fraternity. He also met and married Mary Louise while attending there. He graduated from there in May 1951. Later, Rand was also a graduate of the University of Wisconsin at Madison, Graduate School of Banking.

Employment: Rand spent a few years working for banks in Dallas Center, IA and Perry, IA before joining Shelby County State Bank (SCSB) in Harlan in 1958; he was president there for more than 40 years. He also started Eagle Construction Company.

Hobbies/Interests: Served the community for years on the Iowa Republican Central Committee, on the Harlan City Council, and as president of the Iowa Bankers Association; was a driving force behind numerous hospital and civic organizations in Harlan, including the Petersen Wellness Center, the Shelby County Historical Museum and the Therkildsen Activity Center; he supported the Danish Immigrant Museum (Elk Horn, IA), the Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation, and the University of Iowa where he and Mary Louise supported countless scholarships, Old Capitol, Hawkeye Arena Recreation Campaign, the University of Iowa Art Museum(s), first generation students and others. He enjoyed collecting Edward Barker pottery; had talented carpentry skills (bookshelves, desks…) and handmade Scandinavian Rya rugs. Enjoyed traveling with friends and the fall leaves of New England.
