Education: Graduated from Walnut (IA) High School, Class of 1959. While there, he excelled in multiple sports, played the accordion, participated in 4H, and sang in the choir. In 1963 he graduated from Dana College, Blaire, NE, with a BA in Education. While there, Gary played basketball and baseball and was crowned the Mayfest King during his senior year. He attended graduate school at Gannon University in Erie, PA and also attended graduate school at the University of Iowa in Iowa City, IA for English and Speech.

Religious affiliation: Was baptized and confirmed in the Christian faith, and later participated in Cursillo, a faith-based fellowship, in the late 1970s, where he experienced a renewal of his faith. He attended Peace United Church of Christ, Walnut, IA, for many years throughout his life.

Marriage: Judy Swenson; Aug. 21, 1964; Erie, PA

Employment: While attending graduate school in Erie, PA, he worked at Mac-Erie Manufacturing. After completing his graduate degrees and relocating to Iowa, he taught high school English and Speech, as well as having directed several high school plays, and coached multiple high school sports at Walnut, Dunlap, Griswold, Perry and Carlisle school districts. He moved to Grinnell, IA in 1978, and then worked in car sales, eventually expanding his career choices as an insurance agent. While working for Kansas City Life, he was awarded the “Top Hatter’s Award” for being one of the top 20 insurance agents in the country.

Hobbies/Interests: Enjoyed sports; was a huge fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes and Chicago Cubs baseball
