Survived by: Daughter, Joni (spouse, Matt) Mardesen of Shelby, IA; son, Steve (spouse, Cari) Brockmann of Shelby, IA; brother, Dewey (spouse, Carol) Brockmann of Council Bluffs, IA; grandchildren, Tyler, Brady, Connor, Dakota, and Briar; great-granddaughter, Aurora; nieces; nephews; other family members and friends

Education: Attended school in Harlan, IA and graduated with the Class of 1952; after his military service, he attended Westmar College in LeMars, IA, and was awarded his BA degree in Education in May 1960. After his marriage, he completed his MA degree through the University of South Dakota in Vermillion, SD

Religious affiliation: member, United Lutheran Church, Shelby, IA

Military service: Enlisted in the U. S. Army in Aug. 1954; took Basic and Missile School at Fort Bliss, TX, and then stationed at a missile site at Fort Niagara, NY. Honorably discharged in Aug. 1956

Marriage: Karan Kay Bertram; June 16, 1961; Ireton, IA

Employment: Worked as a painter before his military service; after completing his degree, he began teaching in the Rembrandt (IA) Consolidated School System, and taught Junior High math, 7-12 Shop, and Driver’s Education classes. After completing his master’s degree, Richard became the Shelby (IA) High School principal until his retirement in 1996.

Hobbies/Interests: Member, American Legion Post #240, Shelby, IA; enjoyed fishing with his grandchildren; enjoyed gardening and playing cards with Karen
