During her junior and senior years of high school, Frances took college teaching courses and practiced teaching in Lincoln 5 County School (Shelby County, IA). She took the State Teachers Test and received a Normal Training Certificate to teach kindergarten through grade 8, and taught 1 year at Fairview Township County School #4 (Shelby County, IA). She substituted the following year in Lincoln Township Country School #5 (Shelby County, IA) and at schools in Harrison County, IA.

Religious affiliation: Baptized on Dec. 27, 1931 at the Lutheran Church in Avoca, IA and confirmed at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Harlan, IA; after her marriage to Lawrence Pauley, she became a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church, Harlan, IA.
