Military service: Enlisted in the U. S. Navy in Dec. 1950 in Des Moines, IA; he served overseas during the Korean War with much of his time aboard the USS Bryce Canyon, a Shenandoah-class destroyer; while he served, he was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal as well as the Korean Service Medal, and was honorably discharged in Oct. 1954 in Long Beach, CA.

Employment: After completion of his military service, Junior returned to the farm for a few months, and then began working for Farmer’s Coop Creamery out of Kimballton, IA with his own milk route. Additionally, he drove truck for the Palmer Wiuff Farm, transporting cattle to the west coast. Next, Junior worked for the Petersen Brother’s in Jacksonville, IA, running their corn sheller and hauling cattle. He enjoyed driving truck and continued doing so, driving grain throughout the Midwest for the I & K Elevator in Irwin. Lastly, he was employed by Western Engineering of Harlan where he drove truck for several years, finally retiring in 1995.
