In Response To: Re: Marriage of Charles Stein (Rebecca Foster)

I did extensive research for the homeowners of the Chas F Stein home for their 2010 house tour.

I never found evidence for a marriage to an Augusta.

However, Chas' will, in German, which I had translated, clearly states he wishes to be buried with his brother--and his brother's name was August.

On the second page of his will Charles F Stein orders Joh. Alfred Hurst to place a headstone on his own (Charles F Stein's) final resting place in Scott County where his brother has been buried, to cost at least three hundred, but not more than five hundred Dollars.

I think the stone carver made an assumption it was for a husband and wife.

Tracking them in records:

-In Davenport in 1849 there's a C. Steene head of household with 2 occupants; supposedly the census was done by June 15. That might be Chas & August.

-August 25, 1849 is the date of instrument for August Stein buying the farmland in Blue Grass Twp; it's filed Nov 3, 1849 (they weren't required to record transactions).

-In 1850 August Stein is listed in the Rambo household; I've been through ancestry's transcription database but have failed to find Chas there. Either he missed the census, got skipped in the transcription, or is somewhere else.

-The 1851 census hadn't been transcribed yet.

-In 1852 Chas & Augustus are listed next to each other and the list is not alphabetized, which leads me to believe they are living together.

-August disappears from records

-1854 Chas is in household of 3 males & 2 females. He's married to Eliza, has 2 stepsons (the aliens); the other female could be household help, or could be his sister Christine.
