Private graveside services for Deane Challis, 71, Davenport, and formerly of Tipton, were held April 8, 1996 at Davenport Memorial Park cemetery.

Mr. Challis died April 4 at Genesis Medical Center-East Campus in Davenport.

The son of Ralph G. and Eva Lu Werling Challis, he was born June 10, 1924 in Tipton. He married Margaret Arnold Jan. 4, 1948 in Nashua.

Mr. Challis was employed at Freed Heating and Air for 29 years. He had previously worked as a wholesaler with different furnace distributors and had been in sales with AAA of Iowa.

He served as a cook in the U.S. Navy on the USS Argonne.

Mr. Challis was a member of the Moose Lodge. He enjoyed swimming, car races, big band music and yard work.

He is survived by his wife; a son, Deane Challis Jr., Independence, Mo.; a daughter, Laura Deane Braun, Davenport; a sister, Virginia Lake, Davenport; 5 grandchildren and a great-grandchild.
