Journey was born January 10, 1923, in Livonia, Mo., the son of George Riley and Emma Frances (Cassidy) Abbott. He grew up helping his family on the farm and was a retired Army veteran of World War II. He retired from Alcoa after many years of service in various departments. Later in life, he had four children: Emma, Duane, Larry and Jeffrey. After he retired his days consisted of spending time with his grandchildren, hunting, fishing, playing cards and watching the Cubs while eating chocolate ice cream. He also enjoyed gardening and building things out of nothing such as tetherball stands, pitching nets and birdhouses. He loved sitting on his swing and watching the birds fly in and take bread he threw to them, into their nests or cheering his grandkids at a softball game or taking them out for ice cream whether they won or lost. Journey was an amazing man with a huge heart. If someone needed help he would always be there. He was caring and devoted to putting his family's needs before his own.

Those left to honor his memory include his children, Emma Abbott, Duane (Christine) Abbott and Larry Abbott, all of Davenport, and Jeffrey (Mary Lou) Abbott, of Georgia; 13 grandchildren, Tammi, Brenda, Doris, Lisa, Jody, Lili, Hope, Sue, Amanda, Dillon, Marcus, Nikkolas and Dakohta; 21 great-grandchildren, one great-great grandchild; and many nieces and nephews.

He was welcomed into heaven by his parents, seven siblings and a grandson, Duane "D.J." Abbott II.
