March 27, 1930 - June 15, 2018

Violet A. Wunschel, age 88, of Odebolt, Iowa passed away on Friday, June 15, 2018, at the Black Hawk Life Care Center of Lake View, Iowa.

Funeral Services were held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, June 22, 2018 at the Trinity Lutheran Church of Odebolt, Iowa. Rev. David Viggers officiated; with Committal Services following in the Wall Lake Cemetery of Wall Lake, Iowa.

Visitatian was held one hour prior from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., Friday, June 22, 2018 at the Trinity Lutheran Church of Odebolt, Iowa. The Christensen-Van Houten Funeral Home of Odebolt, Iowa was in charge of the funeral arrangements.

Violet "Vi" Wunschel was born on March 27, 1930, in Arthur, Iowa to Jesse and Grace (Lincoln) Thevenot. In her early years, she was raised on a farm north of Arthur. She helped with many farm chores and loved to ride her horse.

Violet attended high school in Arthur, Iowa, where she enjoyed playing basketball. She graduated valedictorian of her class.

On May 29, 1949, she married Delbert Eugene Wunschel at the Arthur Methodist Church in Arthur, Iowa. The couple resided on a farm between Arthur and Odebolt. This union was blessed with two children - Sally and Julie. The couple moved to Odebolt in the fall of 1969.

Violet loved to do embroidery work and many of her tea towels are used in family and friend's kitchens. She loved to read and in her later years, could be seen with a book in her hand. She also volunteered and served on the Friends of the Library group in Odebolt. Violet was an active participant in the Odebolt Nursing Home Auxiliary. She loved to go to the nursing home and playing the organ or piano for the residents. She also enjoyed playing cards.

Family was an important part of Violet's life. She enjoyed hearing about her grandchildrren's activities. She also attended as many activities as she could, as well as activities of her nieces and nephew's families.

Left to cherish her memory are her two children: Sally (Dale) Nellis of Ankeny, IA; Julie (Bob) Foley of Salem, Oregon; 4 grandchildren; Jason (Ann) Nellis, of Austin, TX; Heather (Sean) Lynam, Ankeny, IA; Jenna (Justin) Greenbaum of Bala Cynwyd, PA; Max Barnes of Tualatin, OR; 4 great grandchildren: Owen Nellis, Keelyn Lynam, Easton Lynam and William Bear Barnes; sister Jane Howard of Sioux City, IA; many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Jesse and Grace Thevenot, her husband Delbert Wunschel; a stillborn son; parents-in-law Louis and Marie Wunschel; brothers Chester Thevenot and Ross Thevenot; sisters Mildred Noll and Marge Lippincott.
