OLDEST INHABITANT DIES

John McGAUGHEY Passes Away at the Age of 82 Years

CAME IN SPRING OF 1854

Was Sherriff of Ringgold County and Mt. Ayr's Postmaster - Funeral Today

John McGAUGHEY died yesterday (Monday) at his home in Knowlton at the age of 82.

He had been in feeble health for several months and during the last few weeks his death had been almost momentarily expected. The end came at 9:30 July 30.

Probably no one settled in Ringgold county at an earlier date than did Mr. and Mrs. McGAUGHEY. They came here in the spring of the 1854 and lived here continuously since that time except during his service in the army and a few years that they lived in Kansas.

John McGAUGHEY was born in Putnam county, Ind., in 1824. He was married to Mary BAIRD in 1844 and together they came to the county to share the hardships of pioneer life. He settled on a farm near Knowlton. He was sheriff of Ringgold county for two years, 1862-3, and postmaster at Mt. Ayr from 1865 to 1868. In 1890 he moved to Knowlton where he conducted a meat market for a number of years. He served for three years as mayor of Knowlton and has always been one of the town's most honored and influential citizens.

Mr. McGAUGHEY leaves a widow and two sons, a daughter having died in infancy [note: Mary's obituary says they had 6 children]. The older son, T. D. McGAUGHEY lives near Knowlton and the younger son, Sam, lives in Oklahoma. Upon the widow his death comes as a severe blow, she having been a helpless invalid for a number of years.

The funeral was conducted at 10 o'clock today from the home of Rev. R. J. TENNANT, and the remains were brought to Mt. Ayr for interment in Rose Hill cemetery.
