OBITUARY ~ HARRY EDWARD GUNTER
January 30, 1907 ~ July 28, 1981

Harry Edward Gunter, son of Calvin and Alice Gunter, was born January 30, 1907, in Benton, Iowa, and passed away July 28, 1981, at his home in Mount Ayr, Iowa, at the age of 74 years, five months and 28 days.

He was one of a family of seven children, five of whom -- Walker, Addie, Leonard, Forrest and Phil -- preceded him in death, as did his mother and father.

He was united in marriage in 1936 to Mary Snethen and to this union was born one daughter -- Phyllis.

He united with the Methodist Church at Benton as a young man and always lived an exemplary Christian life. He was a kind and loving father, husband and grandpa and was a friend to all who knew him.

His early life was spent working for the railroad and he has always kept an interest in anything pertaining to trains and railroads.

In 1933 he began his career in watchmaking. He attended a watchmaking school in Elgin, Illinois, and since then has been in business in Mount Ayr for 48 years.

He was a memeber of the Masonic Lodge, I.O.O.F., Zag Ga Zig Shriners Shiek Shrine Unit, American Jewelers Association, Mount Ayr Gold and Country Club, Community Improvement Club and other organizations. He gave unselfishly of his time and donations to all organizations.

Left to cherish his memory is his devoted wife, Mary; one daughter, Phyllis Evans and son-in-law Bob Evans of Red Oak; a grandson, Ted Evans of Villisaca, Iowa; a grandson, Ron and his wife Beth and a great-granddaughter, Mindy, of Red Oak; and one brother Paul of Dewey, Oklahoma; nieces and nephews and a host of relatives and friends.

The following poem seems to express the way Harry might have felt:

The money you make
and The money you spend
And the money you hoard
To the bitter end.

Can never pile high
Nor root so deep
As the friends you make
And the friends you keep.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, July 31, 1981, from the Wilson-Watson Funeral Home in Mount Ayr. Officiating were Pastor Milt Henderson and Joe Gross, who conducted Masonic Rites with the assistance of Faith Lodge No. 170, A.F. and A.M.

Organist was Mrs. Robert Thomas an vocalist was Arlen Hughes. Casketbearers were Marion Euritt, Eldon Main, Max McGehee, David Hightshoe, Lowell Green and Bob Smith. Honorary casketbearers were Esse Free, Gene Trask, Royce Davis, Jim Haley, Howard Nichols, Joe Brand and Burl Dickerson. Burial was in Rose Hill Cemetery at Mount Ayr.
