LOUISE PHELPS, 89

Louise Phelps, 89, died Friday, January 13, 1995 at Park Centre in Newton, Iowa.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 17, 1995 at Watts Funeral Home, Montezuma, Ia. Rev Torger Johnson, United Methodist Church of Guernsey, officiated. Mrs. Kathleen Ramsey was organist and Mrs. Carol Dale was soloist with music selections of "How Great Thou Art" and "Just A Closer Walk With Thee." Casket bearers were Ted Grier, Joe Grier, Ronald Grier, Greg Nelson, Dennis Phelps and David Pidima. Burial was in Guernsey Cemetery, Guernsey, Ia.

Louise was born March 25, 1905 in Lincoln Township near Deep River, Ia., the daughter of Mark and Sadie Bowden Grier. She graduated from Guernsey High School in 1924. On Feb. 18, 1925 she was united in marriage with Cecil L. Phelps. They farmed all of their married life, living on the family farm for over 50 years. They moved to Montezuma in 1983. Cecil died December 7, 1991. For the past two years Louise has resided at Park Centre. She was a long time member of the Guernsey United Methodist Church and as long as her health permitted, remained active in its functions. She was also a member of the Pleasant Ridge Club.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one granddaughter, Barbara Phelps; one great-granddaughter, Denae Knowles; and one sister, Zelma Provin.

Louise is survived by two children and their spouses: Phyllis and Carroll Nelson of Newton, and Duane and Pat Phelps of Montezuma; 7 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; 4 brothers: Paul Grier and Dale Grier, both of Newton; Mark Grier of Montezuma; and Laverne Grier of Pella; many nieces and nephews, whom she was like a mother to; and other relatives and many friends.

Memorials may be made to the Guernsey United Methodist Church.
