DORIS BREITING

Doris Mae Hutchison was born in a tarpaper shack in Pretty Valley, Saskatchewan, Canada. There, her American-born parents still used horses to till the soil. At the age of six, her family moved back to Grinnell. There she lived the rest of her life, most of it with Gene Breiting, whom she married in 1936. Later, at Gene's urging they returned to Canada to revisit her birthplace. Her ashes lie beside Gene's in Hazelwood Cemetery.

Doris was an expert knitter, sewer, teddy bear maker and card shark. In her hands, one could watch a sock, mitten or sweater grow before one's eyes. During her 63-year marriage to Gene, one of the highlights was a return to Europe with the Seventh Armored Division Association to remember Gene's service during World War II.

Doris loved her three children and grandchildren and was a wonderful mother-in-law. After her family, she devoted herself to activities at First Presbyterian Church and The Second Mile.

Doris' children, Meredith, Amelia and Tom; son-in-law John, daughter-in-law Lauren and grandchildren Bret, Kate and Geoff request donations be made in her name to The Iowa Eye Bank, 2346 Mormon Trek-Blvd, Ste. 1500, Iowa City, IA 52246; The Gorilla Foundation, Box 62030, Woodside, CA 94062 or Poweshiek Animal League Shelter, Box 123, Grinnell, IA 50112.

A summertime teddy bear's picnic is planned. Please honor Doris by coming.
