DR. SHERMAN
DIES AT 90

Leo P. Sherman, 90, of 1515 Broad St., Grinnell, died Wednesday morning at his home following a lengthy illness.

Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 14, at the Smith Funeral Home and side facility, with Gene Cree, a member of the Church of Christ, Scientist, Des Moines, officiating. Organist will be Elbert Smith.

Following cremation, Dr. Sherman's ashes will be taken to the family plot in Salem, N.Y. Should friends desire, memorials in Dr. Sherman's name may be made to Grinnell College and may be left at the funeral home.

The son of Charles Warner and Margaret Ann McKee Sherman, he was born June 11, 1888, at Salem, N.Y., where he attended public schools. He was graduated from Salem Academy in 1904 and from Suffield Academy in 1905. He taught country school at Simsbury, Conn., from 1905 to 1906. He was graduated from Dartmouth College in 1910.

From 1911 to 1913, he taught general science and coached at Sheridan, Wyo., and from 1913 to 1916, he taught and coached at Paducah, Ky. He continued his work on his master's degree at the University of Chicago and began his long association with Grinnell College in 1917. He received his Ph.D. degree in chemistry (cum laude) from the University of Chicago in 1923.

He was a member of the Iowa Academy of Science, a 50-year member of the American Chemical Society, a recipient of the Iowa Award from the American Chemical Society in 1953, a member of the Grinnell Fortnightly Club for 48 years, and had been a member of the Grinnell Kiwanis Club. He was also a member of the First Church, Scientist, in Grinnell and of the Mother Church. Dr. Sherman had been professor emeritus of the chemistry department here since 1953.

On Dec. 27, 1911, he was married to Bertha Louise Spencer at Suffield, Conn. Dr. and Mrs. Sherman had made their home in Grinnell since 1917.

Survivors include his wife, Bertha; his daughters, Mrs. David (Margaret) Bair of Winnetka, Ill., Mrs. Paul (Lucy) Bridgham of St. Joseph, Mich., and Mrs. Miriam McEwen of Amherst, Mass.; 14 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Mrs. Elizabeth Weaver; three brothers, Robert, Myron and Harry Sherman; and one sister, Mrs. Martha Trumbull.
