MRS. SHERMAN DIES IN ILLINOIS

Bertha Spencer Sherman, 99, of Winnetka, Ill., formerly of Grinnell, died Wednesday, April 15, in Illinois, where she had lived for the past two years.

A private graveside service will be held at a later date at Evergreen Cemetery, Salem, N.Y. Memorials may be made to Grinnell College or the First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Grinnell.

The daughter of William H. and Mary Louise Kellogg Spencer, she was born on May 25, 1887, in New Hartford, Conn. She was educated in Suffield, Conn., schools, graduating from Suffield Academy in 1905 and from Wheelock College in 1907. She taught primary grades in Suffield and Chester, Conn.

On Dec. 27, 1911, she was married to Leo P. Sherman. She was a member of The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Mass. In 1932 she became a charter member of the Grinnell Girls Camp Association and was secretary-treasurer for 40 years. She was also active for several years with Goodfellows and with Camp Fire Girls. She was a longtime member of the D.A.R.; P.E.O Chapter BM, and the Levart Club.

Survivors include three daughters, Margaret Bair of Winnetka, Lucy Bridgham of St. Joseph, Mich., and Miriam McEwen of Amherst, Mass.; 14 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her husband and one daughter, Elizabeth Weaver.
