Edith Elizabeth Spading, 91, of Brooklyn died Wednesday, December 31, 1997 in the Brookhaven Nursing Home in Brooklyn.

Funeral services were January 2 at Grace United Methodist Church in Brooklyn. Rev. William B. Daylong officiated. The organist was Angie Hawkins and soloist was Terry Osborne. "In the Garden" was the special musical selection and the congregational hymn was "Amazing Grace."

Flower attendants were Max and Elizabeth Montgomery and Sharon Ford.

Honorary casket bearers were Edith's nephews and nieces. Casket bearers were Donald Paynter, John Metz, Robert Spading, Loren Ford, Ross McCulla and Dennis Kissinger.

Interment was in the Trinity Lutheran Church Cemetery in rural Malcom.

Nevenhoven Funeral Home of Brooklyn was in charge of arrangements.

Edith was born in Warren Township, Poweshiek County, Iowa on December 25, 1906. She was the daughter of Albert and Mary Jepp Spading and the eldest of eight children. She had three brothers and four sisters.

When she was seven, her family moved to a farm north of Brooklyn where she was raised. She graduated from Brooklyn High School in 1925 and Drake University, where she received an education degree in 1962.

She taught for 40 years in the Brooklyn area while caring for her parents. When she retired, she lived in Brooklyn for the rest of her life. Her last six months were spent at Brookhaven Nursing Home.

Edith was an active 50-year member of Grace United Methodist Church and Grace UMW. She was a life member of the Columbian Club, Malcom Study Club and Kent Ladies Aid. She held offices in the Grace UMW and was church treasurer.

Her hobbies and interests were many. She enjoyed fishing, traveling, playing cards, visiting with friends, quilting, crocheting, needlepoint and tatting. She was always busy with arts and crafts and was an avid reader.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Kathryn of Momence, Ill. and three brothers, Harry, Ross and Marvin Spading.

A memorial fund in her name has been established for Grace United Methodist Church.
