MARCIA J. LOCKARD

Marcia J. Lockard, 75, passed away Thursday, September 28, 2017, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:30 a.m. Thursday, October 5, 2017, at St. Mary of Nazareth Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Ridgedale Cemetery in Johnston.

Marcia was born September 4, 1942, in Newton, IA, to Earl and June (Kendall) Stepp. She was raided on a farm near Kellogg, IA, attended Rock Creek Country School and graduated from Grinnell High School. Marcia attended Simpson College for a year for pre-nursing and received her nursing degree from Iowa Methodist Hospital School of Nursing. Marcia was in 4-H and showed cattle, ponies and horses. She enjoyed music and played the accordion and the piano. Marcia loved to travel, fish, hunt and camp with her family. She enjoyed snow and water skiing. In recent years, going to the horse races and watching the Chicago Cubs were some of her favorite pastimes. Marcia married James Lockard on April 7, 1973, in Elkhorn, IA and they made their home in Johnston where they raised their family. Marcia worked in nursing, case management and quality assurance throughout her career and was instrumental in establishing a pediatric unit at Northwest Hospital. She was the forerunner in changing nurse's dress code to pants instead of nurse's dress uniforms. Marcia was a member of Johnston's Women's Connection.

Marcia is survived by her husband, James Lockard, daughter, Hilleary (John Rong) Lockard of Des Moines, IA; two step sons, Brett (Mary) Lockard of Dillon, CO, John Lockard of Des Moines, IA; two step daughters, Pamela (Charlie) Norelius of Johnston, IA, and Jacqueline (Terry) Sims of Urbandale, IA; brother, Phil Stepp of Kellogg, IA, ten grandchildren; three great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m. Wednesday, October 4, at Iles-Westover Chapel in Des Moines where Rosary will be said at 7 p.m. Contributions may be made to the Arthritis Foundation. Online condolences will be welcomed at IlesCares.com.
