Janet L. Schmidt, 82, of Grinnell, died Sunday, Oct. 7, 2012, at Grinnell Regional Medical Center.

A funeral service was scheduled for Thursday morning, Oct. 11, at Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell with Rev. Rose Blank, pastor of the Grinnell United Methodist Church, officiating. Music was provided by William Tinker, pianist and Rhonda Minner, vocalist. Casket bearers were Dave Jeffries, George Trowbridge, Michelle and Eric Krohn, Danielle and Brandan Long, Denise Whannel and Dennis Whannel. Honorary bearers were Russell Whannel and Ryan Trowbridge. Interment was at Hazelwood Cemetery in Grinnell.

Janet was born July 25, 1930, in Holdrege, Neb., to Fred and Jessamine Rossman Johnson. The family moved to Grinnell and she attended Grinnell schools, and graduated from Grinnell High School with the Class of 1948.

Janet was a mother and a homemaker for most of her life but she also worked outside the home in various businesses in Grinnell. She was united in marriage with Marvin Schmidt on Nov. 16, 1967 in Grinnell.

She was a member of the Grinnell United Methodist Church and she enjoyed playing golf and cards. She also enjoyed doing various crafts and tending to her rose bushes and flower garden.

Survivors include three daughters, Kathleen Phipps of Ankeny, Cynthia Jeffries of Ft. Wayne, Ind., and Debra Trowbridge of Polk City; five grandchildren; and four great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one great granddaughter; and her brother, Donald Johnson.
