Funeral services here Tuesday for Maude VanMeter
Mrs. Maude VanMeter, widow of the late Grant VanMeter and a longtime resident of the Griswold community, passed away early Sunday morning. Mrs. VanMeter passed away at the Clarinda hospital where she had been a patient for some time.
Cora Maude VanMeter, whose maiden name was Watson, was born at Avoca, Illinois, on January 28, 1870, and at her passing had reached the age of 83 years, 9 months, and 17 day. She was one of twin daughters born to Mr. and Mrs. Watson and whose mother passed away at the birth of the daughters. When three days of age the deceased was taken by the late Mr. and Mrs. William Asay and reared as their own child. When Mrs. VanMeter was seven years of age she came to the Walnut, Iowa community with the Asay family and grew to womanhood there. On February 15, 1887, she was united in marriage to the late Grant VanMeter at Marne. Since their marriage they resided in the Griswold community except for a period of about a year. This period was at Broadwater, Nebraska, where Mr. VanMeter passed away in 1929 following injuries suffered in a runaway accident. Following the death of the husband, Mrs. VanMeter had resided in Griswold until her last illness. There were no children born to Mr. and Mrs. VanMeter. There are no immediate survivors, except possibly one nephew, who has not been heard from in many years. Mrs. VanMeter was a member of the Griswold Methodist church in which she was a very loyal and enthusiastic worker for many years. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at the Wagler Funeral Home. Rev. Horace Ireland, pastor of the local Methodist church officiated. The music was by Boyd Carlton, soloist, and accompanied by Mrs. H. P. Carlton. Casket bearers were Vernon Hayes, Fred DeWitt, Harry Mueller, Guy Johnson, Byron Kewin, and Ira Potter. Interment was made in the Griswold Cemetery.
