One Killed, Two Injured in Fiery Two-car Crash
A Council Bluffs man was killed and two other persons were injured in a fiery crash Friday night at Eleventh Street and Second Avenue. Dead was John Frederick White, 29, 1315 Sixth Ave., the driver of a small foreign sports car nearly demolished in the accident. Obituary on page 3. His was the ninth traffic fatality in Council Bluffs this year and the 15th in Pottawattamie County.
Woman in Hospital
Injured in the crash were White’s mother, Mrs. Juanita White, 60, and the driver of the second vehicle, Jess John Tubbs, 40, 429 Glen Ave. Mrs. White was reported in “fairly good” condition Sunday at Jennie Edmundson Hospital with a fractured shoulder and multiple bruises. Tubbs only suffered a sprained wrist – even though his car flipped over on its top and skidded about 360 feet. After treatment at the hospital, he was booked by police for investigation and released to the call of the county attorney. Patrolmen C. E. Capel and R. C. Culton said when they arrived at the scene about two or three minutes after the accident, they helped Tubbs out of his overturned car and he appeared to be in good condition.
Two Pinned in Car
They ran to the White car and found the mother mumbling, “How is he.” They rescued her from the wreckage. She and her son were both pinned in the smashed vehicle. A witness about two blocks away told police all he could see at the time of the impact was a burst of flame and what sounded like an explosion. Police said both cars were traveling east on Second Avenue. The Tubbs’ auto attempted to pass, but struck the rearend of the White vehicle, officers reported. The White car traveled 74 feet, hit a light pole, then continued about 114 feet. It stopped on the parking strip 30 feet south of Second Avenue. Tubbs admitted to police traveling 40 to 50 miles per hour in a 25 mile zone. Two fire companies, the Emergency Unit and six cruiser cars arrived on the scene shortly after the crash.
