Death of Mrs. Storrs
Mrs. H. R. Storrs died at her home in Council Bluffs, Wednesday, April 6. The remains were brought to Carson, Thursday, and the funeral held from the M. E. church at that place. The following obituary notice is clipped from the Carson Critic.
Mary Eliza Putnam was born in Jefferson, New Hampshire, March 5, 1835. She was the second of a family of nine, of whom all but one are well known to the residents of this locality. When but a girl she removed with her parents to Dixon, Ill., where in 1855 she was united in marriage to Henry R. Storrs, who now survives her. They resided for some years in Wisconsin, returning to Illinois when the Chippewa uprising in 1862 caused many settlers to seek safety from the murderous Indians. They continued to reside in Illinois until the autumn of 1873, when they came to Iowa and for a long time were among the best known and highly respected families of Center Township. They bought and improved the farm now owned by J. W. Tipton, where they resided for many years. The family were among the first members of the M. E. church at Spring Creek and were long regarded as among the most active and effective workers. They were liberal contributors in every good cause and assisted materially in the building of the present church there. Some years ago they sold their property here with the intention of joining their sons who had located in Nebraska, but not liking that state they returned to Council Bluffs which has since been their home. There survives to mourn her loss a husband and seven children. A. L. and George Storrs, of Cedar Rapids, Nebraska; Mrs. D. L. Harcourt, of Grand Rapids, Mrs. Frank Schofield, of this place, and William, Florence and Mable Storrs, of Council Bluffs. All were with her in her last hours. One daughter, Mrs. Clara Thomas, died at Council Bluffs several years ago. Two brothers, G. M. and L. R. Putnam, with two sisters, Mrs. F. Morris and Miss Belle Putnam, reside here, while her remaining brother, C. W. Putnam, went but a few weeks ago to Oklahoma.
