Sunday noon Mr. Larkin went to one of his neighbors to borrow a gun to shoot a hawk, returned home, placed the gun in the stable, and went to his dinner. After dinner, he remarked that if he should die now it would be on a full stomach, and the remainder of the afternoon he acted strangely and made a great many strange remarks. He remained at home till early that night when he told his wife that he would go and take the gun home and accordingly went out for that purpose. He passed up the fence north about eighty yards from the house and was standing there when John Fennel passes by. John said good evening, and getting a rather muffled reply, concluded that some one had been stationed there to play a trick on him. He kept his eye on him as he rode on south and when he got away about four or five rods he heard the re—of a gun, and Larkin screamed, “John, John,” and sank gradually to the ground. Some one….., “have you shot your dog, John?” “No,” was the reply, some man has killed himself…. But seeing him there concluded to call the neighbors before …. Anything. He accordingly rode to Mr. Godd house, and Judge Talbott who came down and found Mr. Larkin lying on his back. Dr. Nye was called to see him, but found him beyond the reach of human skill. It is a sad affair. Nothing is known as to the …. Of this rash step. Mr. Larkin was a man who stood high in the estimation of his fellow, a man of … to a ordinary intelligence and good sense.. He leaves a wife and .. children to mourn his untimely end. One more soul has passed all unbidden into the …. Let us draw the mantle of charity over whatever .. he may have possessed and remember only his virtues.
