With only the surname and no first name provided, it took some time to locate records on Mr. Hayes.

I located his commitment papers from Polk County and then obtained the Guardianship docket 7, #2242 for J. M. Hayes, Insane filed by Melissa F. Hayes on December 12, 1890. File continues to petition to sell real estate on December 18, 1890; report of sale on December 24, 1890 and continues on for 24 court filings. I can send you the court docket if you wish. It cannot be attached to this query.

Jay M. Hayes (J. M. Hayes) was committed to the insane asylum at Mount Pleasant, Henry County, Iowa. He died there on June 17, 1892, age 45. Henry County, Iowa Death Certificate #713, year 1892. I was unable to locate any extant Des Moines newspapers for June 1892.

Hope this helps your research.
