Mrs. Smith, age 92, died Saturday, January 21 at Wesley Acres Care Center. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Monday, January 30, 2012 at the Slade - O'Donnell Funeral Home in Leon. Josephine "Jo" Mildred Smith, age 92 of Des Moines, Iowa, passed away at Wesley Acres Care Center in Des Moines on Saturday, January 21, 2012. She was born on August 23, 1919 to Walter Alvia and Delilah Elvira "Ella" (Gammon) Campbell in Decatur County, Iowa. Jo graduated from Leon High School in Leon, Iowa. She attended many of her class reunions over the years, as her friends know. She married Walter Roland Smith on February 3, 1948. Together they owned and operated the Leon Skelgas Service and Furniture Store. After his death in 1965, Jo moved to Des Moines. Her working years were spent in the Des Moines Public School system where she was the secretary for the music department until her retirement. Preceding her in death were her parents; husband Walt; and two sisters, Marea Martin and husband Bob and Maxine Willey and her husband Orin. Jo is survived by two nieces, Carole Martin of Minneapolis, Minnesota and Jackie Kemmer of Phoenix, Arizona; great nieces and nephews, David Kemmer, Martha Contreris, Jane Felkner, Debbie Schneider, and Greg Schneider; special great, great niece Lara Noren; long time friend Dorothy McClatchey of Des Moines; and numerous other friends across the country.
