Deacon Bill died Tuesday, September 13, 2011 at Iowa Methodist Medical Center. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. Saturday, September 17 at St. Anthony Catholic Church with burial to follow at Glendale Cemetery. Visitation will be 5:30 to 8 p.m., Friday, September 16 at the church with a Rosary at 6:30 and Vigil Service beginning at 7 p.m.

William LeRoy Smith, son of Robert and Ruby (Campbell) Smith, was born August 3, 1937 in Creston, Iowa. He was united in marriage with Yvonne "Pat" Boehmer on November 26, 1955 and this union was blessed with six children. Deacon Bill worked as a truck driver, and later in life was ordained as a deacon. He served the parishes of St. Anthony and St. Joseph in Des Moines. Deacon Bill and Pat were involved with World Wide Marriage Encounter for over 20 years. Deacon Bill liked to dance, travel, visit the Iowa State Fair, and spoil his grandkids. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus.

Deacon Bill was preceded in death by his parents; one child; two brothers and one sister; and his grandchildren: William Smith III and Megan Smith.

Deacon Bill is remembered by his wife, Pat; children: Bill Smith, Jr. (Debbie), Becky Smith, Mark Smith (Nancy), Mary Trucano, and Eric Smith (Jodi); grandchildren: Brandon Smith, Bridget Smith, Crystal Cortese (Nick), Jake Smith, Ashleigh Trucano, Zachary Smith, Cole (C.W.) Smith, Michael Smith, and Alexis Trucano; and three sisters and one brother.

Memorial contributions may be left to Deacon Bill's family.
