Jack Silverstein, 91, died at Kavanagh House on Saturday, September 17, 2011. Funeral services will be 3:30 p.m. Monday, September 19 at Iles Funeral Homes-Dunn's Chapel. Burial will be at Jewish Glendale Cemetery.

Jack was born in Des Moines on June 18, 1920 to Mones and Hannah Silverstein. He graduated from Roosevelt High School then enlisted in the U.S Army during World War II. As a radioman, Jack served with Patton's Third Army, Fifth Armored Division, participating in the Battle of the Bulge and the liberation of Nazi camps.

Jack worked as a scrap metal dealer in Des Moines after the war. He was a member of Temple B'Nai Jeshurun and a ham radio operator under the call letters W0VUN. He was cherished by his family and will be remembered as a loving, quick-witted man with strong convictions who they looked to often for advice.

Jack loved spending time with his family, especially his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. He is survived by his wife of nearly 60 years, Ruthanne of West Des Moines; two daughters, Lynne Silverstein Meinen (Gary) of Pekin, IL and Leslie Silverstein (Jerry Carrington) of West Des Moines; two sons, Lee Silverstein (Amy Schmitt) of West Des Moines and Larry Silverstein (Heather) of Cincinnati, OH; nine grandchildren: Dr. Sarah Jedd (Ben), Ben Meinen, Jonathan Meinen, Samantha Silverstein, Michael Silverstein, Max Silverstein, Molly Silverstein, Jacob Silverstein, and Justin Silverstein; and three great grandsons. Jack was preceded in death by his parents, a brother and three sisters.

Memorials may be directed to the charity of the donor's choice.
