Joel Henry Klisart, 79, died Thursday, October 20, 2016 at Mercy Hospice in Johnston. A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11am, Thursday, October 27, 2016 at St. Theresa Catholic Church, Des Moines. Interment will follow at 2pm, Thursday at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery near Van Meter.
Joel was born November 20, 1936, in Ossian, Iowa, the son of Gustave and Catherine (Kass) Klisart. On February 7, 1959 he was united in marriage to Elaine Meighan in Cedar Falls, Iowa. Joel proudly served in the US Army from 1956 to 1958.
Joel retired from Farm Bureau Financial Services on January 1, 1998, after 35 years as an Investment Vice President - Real Estate. He was a member of St. Theresa Catholic Church in Des Moines and St. Ann Catholic Church in Gulf Breeze, FL. Joel participated in the HyVee Breakfast group and volunteered at Dowling Catholic High School. Joel enjoyed playing golf, watching the Iowa Hawkeyes, and spending time with his family.
Joel is survived by his wife, Elaine; his children, Rock Klisart of Pensacola, FL and Dawn (Ray) Svec of Urbandale; two sisters, Sr. Mary Klisart of Dubuque, IA and Lois (Robert) Sharp of Placitas, NM; two sisters-in-law, Lorna Klisart of Urbandale and Jacque Klisart of Washington, NJ; seven grandchildren, Donny (Nichol) Felgate, Ashley (Ryan) Kuker, Julie (Zach) Swigart, Nathan Svec, Nicholas Svec, Alex Klisart and Brandon Klisart; seven great-grandchildren, Trevor Felgate, Caden, Ryder and Tyson Kuker, Keaton and Landon Swigart, and Maycen Svec; He was preceded in death by his parents and his siblings, Mel Klisart, Luke Klisart, and Jane Long.
Visitation will be held from 5:30-7:30pm, followed by a rosary on Wednesday, October 26, 2016 at Iles Westover Chapel, Des Moines. Memorial contributions may be made to the Dowling Catholic High School or St. Theresa's Catholic Church. Online condolences are welcome at www.IlesCares.com .
