Ruth Irene Seuferer was born on March 2, 1931, to Edward and Irene Seuferer of Lacona, Iowa, where she was one of 10 children.
She attended Lacona Elementary School and also Lacona High School, graduating in 1949. Ruth enjoyed playing on the basketball team throughout high school and was considered the class clown.
Ruth had eight younger brothers and sisters, so there was always someone to play with or get into trouble with. Recalling childhood memories, Ann, who is 14 months younger than Ruth, tells of the time that Ruth decided to cut Ann’s hair. Before the haircut was completed, they decided to stop and she left just one long curl down the back of Ann’s head.
Another memory was their summer between Ruth’s junior and senior year of high school. She and Ann rented a room at a boarding house in downtown Des Moines, and worked a summer job at Woolworth’s dime store to make extra money. They were 17 and 18.
After graduating from high school, Ruth enlisted in the (WAC) Woman’s Army Corp, in September of 1949. She entered basic training at Camp Lee, Virginia. After basic, she then went to The Presidio of San Francisco, California, for additional training and then on to Germany, where she used her clerical skills for the Army. She was discharged Dec. 5, 1952.
When Ruth left the military, with honors, she established her home in Des Moines for the remainder of her life. She used her secretarial skills to further her career, retiring from Farm Bureau Insurance Company after many years of service.
Following retirement, Ruth enjoyed family reunions, and visits and luncheons that she had with some of her closest friends and family. One of her highlights of retirement was getting to travel to Ireland, Australia and Alaska.
Ruth passed away Sunday, Feb. 18, 2018, at Legacy Lodge in Chariton, Iowa, at the age of 86.
She is survived by her siblings Angela Daugherty, Leo (Marie) Seuferer, Howard (Marge) Seuferer, Patricia (Melvin) Miller and Winnie Nicholson, as well as many other relatives and friends.
Services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 24, at Overton Funeral Home in Indianola, IA. Burial followed services in the St. Mary’s Cemetery, Lacona, IA. Visitation was held one hour prior to services at the funeral home.
