Larry Sharp, 77, died Wednesday, December 10, 2014, at Mercy Hospice in Johnston. Graveside services will be held 2:30 p.m. Saturday, December 13, at Chapel Hill Gardens Cemetery.
Larry was born August 20, 1937, in Des Moines to William B. and Zora (Thompson) Sharp. He graduated from North High School in 1955 and later received his B.A. and Master’s Degrees in Music Education from Drake University. He began his teaching career in 1959 as the String and Orchestra Teacher at Newton Community School District, from where he also retired in 1993. More than 30 of his students went on to choose music as their careers while many others found their music experience to be very helpful in other careers they selected.
Larry was the director for the First Christian Church Choir in Newton for 20 years, was a member of the viola section of the Des Moines Symphony for 25 years, the Central College Orchestra for over twenty years and the Waterloo Symphony for five years. He had served on the fundraising board for the first Drake music building. Larry founded the Newton Chamber Orchestra and directed the orchestra for many productions at the Newton Community Theatre. He felt his greatest contribution was introducing his sons to the world of string instruments. They both received their B.A. Degrees in Music.
Larry is survived by his wife of 54 years, Janis, his sons, Bradley (Cindy) Sharp of Scottsdale, AZ and Stanley (YuTong) Sharp of Palos Verdes, CA; six grandchildren and his siblings, Robert (Helen) Sharp of Johnston, Ruth Berven of Des Moines and Wayne (Erica) Sharp of Palm Desert, CA; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers, Donald, Raymond, Rex, Jack, Max and William; and his sisters, Mignon Curry and Jane Ann Sharp.
The family will receive friends from 12 – 2 p.m. Saturday at Iles-Westover Chapel. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association or the American Lung Association. Online condolences will be welcomed at IlesCares.com.
