OBITUARY
September Ann Wethington-Smith was born September 24, 1961, to Robert and Evelyn (Miller) Wethington. September was greeted at home on the family farm by her older sister, Jeneane, and joined there two years later by her baby brother, Larry. Farm life and a close-knit family nurtured her innate generosity, integrity, and authenticity.

She graduated from Tipton High School in 1980 and Iowa State University in 1984, before attending law school at the University of Iowa, where she met Brian Smith, a charming, affable fellow law student. September and Brian married December 27, 1986, in Iowa City and made their home in Johnston, Iowa, where they raised three extraordinary children: Emma (b. 1993), Connor (b. 1996), and Libbie (b. 1999).

September was a brilliant lawyer and an unyielding, loving advocate for her family and friends and beloved dogs. She was the first to show up in times of crisis and worked tirelessly to make holidays and family events special. She was loud and vibrant and filled a room with laughter and thus leaves behind an immense, unfillable void.

Taken from us far too early, she is survived by all her family mentioned here. A memorial service will be held on Friday, October 21, 2022, 2:00 p.m. at Lutheran Church of Hope in West Des Moines, Iowa. Anyone who knew her is welcome to attend.
