He grew up in Linden and graduated from Linden High School in 1960. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in that same year and served in Germany during the Vietnam War. Three years later they welcomed their second son, Travis. They lived in the Des Moines area most of their married life. Bob worked for Des Moines Asphalt until starting his own asphalt/concrete company in 1980. Bob was hardworking and spent long hours to build a successful business. He instilled a strong work ethic in both of his boys who worked for him. When he retired in 2003, he and Kathy enjoyed traveling and gambling. He especially enjoyed spending time watching his grandkids in all of their sports and activities, particularly baseball and softball. He also loved to go fishing with his grandson.
