Bonnie Jean Christensen, 87, passed away April 28, 2022 in West Des Moines, Iowa. She was born on June 26, 1934 to Frank Holger Christensen and Bessie Irene Stier Christensen in Atlantic, Iowa.

Memorial services will be held at Hamilton’s on Westown Parkway, 3601 Westown Parkway, in West Des Moines on Wednesday, May 4, 2022, at 6:00pm with visitation prior from 4:00 to 6:00pm. Burial and graveside service will be in Atlantic, Iowa at a later date.

Bonnie graduated from Massena High School in 1952 and was employed at several businesses in Atlantic before moving to Des Moines in 1959. She worked for National Travelers Life Insurance Company in Des Moines until she retired in 1996. Bonnie made life-long friends during her years at National Travelers, joining them for a regular lunch date for many years following her retirement.

Bonnie was a charter member of the Greater Des Moines Volkssport Association. She enjoyed traveling and was especially fond of her Volkssport trips to Europe. She and her friend, Ardith, completed sanctioned Volkssport walks in 32 different countries. She and Ardith travelled extensively, visiting 62 countries and all 50 states. Bonnie particularly loved visiting the National Parks. Most of their trips in the lower 48 states were “road trips” traveling by car. Bonnie enjoyed sharing her travel stories and photos. She almost always brought back souvenir gifts for family and friends.

Bonnie was a longtime member of Adair United Methodist Church where she sang in the choir. She also attended Grace United Methodist Church in Des Moines. She was a member of the Scandinavian Club and the North of Grand Neighborhood Association. She was a loyal and committed volunteer for the Blood Center of Central Iowa and the Salisbury House.

Bonnie attended the annual hot air balloon events in Indianola for many years. She and Ardith befriended a hot air balloon pilot and his wife and joined their “chase crew.” She had a huge collection of hot air balloon memorabilia.

Bonnie was very giving and loving to all of her family and friends. Aunt Bonnie never seemed to miss a concert, game, or event for her family.

Bonnie is survived by her sister, Joyce Nalevanko of Des Moines; sister-in-law, Sharon Christensen of West Des Moines; brother-in-law, Dick Hudson of Corydon; friend, Ardith Ortgies of Des Moines; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, sister, Della Hudson and brother, Lynn Christensen.

Our family would like to thank the staff at MorningStar Assisted Living and St. Croix Hospice for their wonderful care for Bonnie.

Memorials may be directed to the Alzheimer’s Association. Condolences may be expressed at HamiltonsFuneralHome.com.
