DWIGHT W. MONSMA

Dwight W. Monsma, 88, of Altoona, died Friday, May 13, 2011 at Wesley Acres in Des Moines. Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday, May 18 at Altoona Regular Baptist Church. Burial will be at the Altoona Cemetery.

Dwight was born on November 1, 1922 on the family farm near Taintor, IA to Dirk Lewis and Anna Mae (Elscott) Monsma. He served for the U.S. Army in the Pacific Theater during World War II. After his military service he completed Capital City Business College then worked for 28 years for the State of Iowa Department of Revenue retiring in 1984.

Dwight was a Charter Member of Altoona Regular Baptist Church and member of VFW Post 738. He enjoyed spending time at this mountain home in Big Thompson Canyon, Loveland, CO.

Dwight is survived by his wife of 69 years, Shirley Monsma of Altoona; two sons, Dennis of Altoona and Ron of West Des Moines; sister, Nola (Keith) Emmert of Pella, IA; brother, Gordon of Colorado Springs, CO; six grandchildren and one great grandchild. He was preceded in death by his son, Tom.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Iles Funeral Homes-Grandview Park Chapel. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Altoona Regular Baptist Church or WesleyLife Charitable Giving, where he received professional and loving care.
