Michael Lamar
December 8, 1942 ~ September 7, 2012 (age 69)

Michael Lamar was born December 8, 1942 in Chicago, Illinois to John and Thressa (Cherry) Lamar. He was the second born son and the second oldest of nine siblings.

Michael was raised in Chicago. The Lamar family moved to West Des Moines in the 1950's. At birth the doctors said he would probably not live beyond 14 years of age and they predicted he would be totally blind. God had different plans. He graduated from high school and gained employment at the Hotel Fort Des Moines, Noah's Ark and finally retired from Wilson's ID Packing House. During this time Michael was known for driving newly manufactured, colorful Road Runners. And he had outfits to match! He took pride in keeping his cars clean.

Michael loved God! As he grew older and his eyesight got dimmer, he trusted God and always confessed, "I walk by faith and not by sight." With the loss of his sight, his memory became very sharp. He could remember dates and events for many years back. Michael's memory was so good that if he knew you, he also knew your birthday and other facts about you. He remembered your voice, but most of all, what he could not see, he felt in his heart. Michael was baptized by the late Rev. James Harris at Mt. Hebron Baptist Church. His love for the Lord NEVER failed. He was interested in keeping his body healthy, eating wheat germ to maintain it. He was a body builder and placed in the top six in a body building contest. He loved to lift weights and earned a brown belt in Karate. He appeared to be a quiet soul, but once you got to know him-he could talk! Michael loved listening to old school rhythm and blues, especially Smokey Robinson, the Temptations, James Brown and the Dells.

On September 7, 2012, Michael Lamar departed this life. He was 69 years old.

Preceding him in death were his parents, John and Thressa Lamar; his son, Michael Lamar Jr and his ex-wife and friend, Debbi, Waddell-Lamar.

His loving heart, giving spirit and sense of humor will be greatly missed by his five brothers, Wilbur Cherry, Larry, Dennis, Carl and Wayne Lamar; his sisters, Pam, Omega and Judith Lamar and host of nieces, nephews other relatives and friends. ~ The Henderson Highland Park Funeral Home, Des Moines, IA 07 Sept 2012.
