Catherine Denise Killian Levine, 59, died Monday, September 24, 2012, at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines.

Catherine Denise Killian was born January 31, 1953, in Burlington, Iowa, the daughter of Frank J. and Margaret Amy (Hinkhouse) Killian. A 1971 graduate of Muscatine High School, she represented the fourth generation of her family to attend Parsons College in Fairfield. She graduated from Tarkio College in 1975, and later that year completed a paralegal program at Roosevelt University in Chicago.

Miss Levine married Lloyd “Burke” Ellis Levine on May 24, 1980, at the Killian family home.

Catherine worked as a paralegal in Des Moines, Phoenix, and again in Des Moines before entering Drake University School of Law, graduating in 1991. Her Des Moines law practice specialized in appellate law and she taught in the paralegal program at Des Moines Area Community College. She was a former president of the Iowa Civil Liberties Union.

Catherine is survived by her husband, Lloyd Levine of Des Moines; one daughter, Rachel Elizabeth Killian of Des Moines; two sisters, Deborah Lee of Rock Island, Ill., and Laura Killian of Akron, Ohio; one brother, Doug Killian of Portland, Ore.; and her in-laws, Bernard and Ruth Levine of Des Moines.

Her parents preceded her in death.

A celebration of Catherine’s life will be held at 10:00 am, Saturday, October 6, 2012, at Hamilton’s Southtown Funeral Home, 5400 SW 9th Street, Des Moines Iowa.
