William L. Holcom
Formerly of Des Moines

A memorial service for Lt. Holcom will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, September 17, 2012, at the Iowa Veteran's Cemetery, Van Meter, Iowa.

Lt. Holcom served in World War II as an Army pilot from 1943 to 1946. He was awarded an Air Medal Citation. After discharge, he attended the Drake University College of Pharmacy and received his Bachelor of Pharmacy degree in 1950. He was called to active duty in the U.S. Air Force as a pilot-navigator in 1951 and assigned to South Korea. He was reported missing in action over North Korea on August 8, 1952. Declared Killed in Action December 31, 1953. He was awarded the Purple Heart posthumously.

His widow, Margaret Daly Holcom, married Dr. C. Boyd Granberg in 1955. Margaret died on August 6, 2000.

Lt. Holcom is survived by a daughter, Elizabeth Granberg Niewiarowski (Ron) of Cortc Madera, California, her adoptive father, C. Boyd Granberg, Des Moines, Iowa and her half-sister, Siri L. Granberg, West Des Moines, Iowa.

Lt. Holcom is also survived by two granddaughters, Bridget (Granberg Gilligan (John) of Traverse City, Michigan, and Devin Marie Granberg-Guiberson of Austin, TX; two great-grandchildren, Austin Tuchalski; and Lillian Gilligan; and several nieces and nephews.

A son, Brian Lee, died in 2002.
