Mary Irene Wahlert
1924-2012
Des Moines

Mary Irene Wahlert came into this world on April 14, 1924, and went to join our Heavenly Father on September 23, 2012.

She will forever be remembered for her loving heart, kind spirit, caring blue eyes, and endless smile. Her door was always open for her children returning home when she would least expect them, her grandchildren when they needed a guiding hand, and her great-grandchildren even if it was just to check on how she was doing. One way or another, Mary’s door and arms were always open to support, comfort, and hold close anyone who had lost their way.

Mary’s 88 wonderful years are a time of celebration of her many talents, beautiful qualities, and her life that she shared with so many others. She was loving and set good examples for her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. Mary was a caring wife, superb friend, and an all around fabulous person. Her comforting words always brought a smile to everyone’s face. She was always willing to lend a helping hand. She was nurturing, compassionate, and honest, the type of companion everyone needs in life.

Mary taught her family all of the joys of mankind, the beauty life holds, and created harmony in their lives as they grew. She was a shoulder to cry on, a smile to count on, and unconditional love to live on.

Mary’s greatest gifts couldn’t be wrapped or tied with a bow; it was her unconditional love which made her the richest woman in the world. Her legacy will live on as someone with strength, courage, ability to overcome obstacles and defeat, compassion, diplomacy, and desire to see everyone treated fairly. Mary left the lives of those she touched much better than she found them.

Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond Wahlert; children, Roy and Joe Wahlert; siblings, Glen, Carl, Meryl Dean, Edith, Ethel and Doris; grandchildren, Troy, Tina, Steven and Shelly Joe; and her parents, Cloe and Scott Smith.

She is survived by her daughter, Sharon Wahlert; grandchildren, Doug, Tony, Johnny, Tom, Lisa, Debbie, Shelly, Jeffrey, Brenda, Joe, Jr., Selena, Angie, Mandy, and Christopher; several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; and many other loving relatives and special friends.

Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m., Friday, September 28, 2012, at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, with burial to follow at Oakland Cemetery in De Soto, Iowa. Visitation will be held from 12 to 2:30 p.m. Friday, prior to the service at the funeral home.
