Linda Helen (Mrs. David) McGhee

May 23, 1953 - September 10, 2012
Born in Sioux City, Iowa
Resided in Des Moines, IA

After a heroic fight and with her family by her side, Linda McGhee, 59, died Monday, September 10, 2012 at the University of Iowa Hospital due to complications of leukemia.

Linda was born on May 23, 1953 in Sioux City, IA to Norman and Helen (Schmidt) Hill. She graduated from Southeast Polk High School in 1971. She married her high school sweetheart, David McGhee, in 1972. They lived in Bermuda for three years before moving to Altoona and later Des Moines. Linda worked as a Dialysis Patient Liaison for many years and more recently as a student aide for Southeast Polk Schools. She was a faithful member and Sunday School teacher at Fellowship Baptist Church as well as a member of the American Legion Auxiliary.

In 1987, God blessed Linda on September 21st with a kidney and pancreas transplant. At the time, the transplant procedure of both organs was in the developmental stage, and she was told that the pancreas may last only a year. For Linda that was not acceptable. She managed her condition with such faithful determination and grace that she kept her gift for 25 years. She enthusiastically participated in the Transplant Games with Team Iowa. At her death, she proudly gave the gift of sight by donating her corneas to the Iowa Lions Eye Bank.

Those left to cherish Linda's memory include her husband, David; three sons, Scott David (Karen), Andy David (Meg) and Bryan David (Amy); five grandchildren, Emily, Anna, Joshua, Jacob and Kayla with number six soon to arrive as well as granddaughter, Brooke Clevenger and great grandson, Austin Stigers; her parents, Norman and Helen Hill; parents-in-law, George and Phyllis McGhee; siblings, Jerry (Becky), Steve (Pam), Scott (Diane) Hill and Cheryl (Bruce) Gilbert and numerous nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, September 15 at Fellowship Baptist church. The family will remain to receive friends following the service until 4 p.m. A private burial was held at the Altoona Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be directed to the Iowa Donor Network. ~ The Iles Grandview Park Chapel Funeral Home, Des Moines, IA Mon 10 Sept 2012.
