Des Moines

Mary L. McCarthy, 92, died Friday, August 10, 2012, at Dougherty Hospice House in Sioux Falls, SD. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11 a.m. Friday, August 17, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church with burial to follow at Glendale Cemetery.

Mary was born on August 6, 1920, on a farm near Rochester, MN, which was settled seven generations ago by her great-grandparents from Kerry County, Ireland. Mary graduated from St. Mary's School of Nursing at the Mayo Clinic and served on the staff for two years before becoming one of Northwest Airline's first stewardesses. She flew on Northwest's inaugural flight into New York's La Guardia Airport.

Mary married Gene McCarthy on August 30, 1947 and raised her family in Minneapolis, MN and Dubuque, IA, before settling in Beaverdale in 1962. She worked as a nurse at Broadlawns Hospital, Calvin Manor and Des Moines Area Community College. She volunteered at Holy Trinity Church and School, St. Joseph's Academy, Dowling High School and Kavanagh Hospice House. Mary was also actively involved at Beaverdale Estates where she resided the last nine years.

Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Gene. She is survived by her children, Molly McCarthy (Ken Berger) of Sioux Falls, SD, John McCarthy of Overland Park, KS, Kevin (Mary Pat) McCarthy of Leawood, KS, and Tom (Mary Kay) McCarthy of Omaha, NE; eleven grandchildren, and her siblings, Evie Cierzan, Betty Bowman and Robert Lawler, all of Rochester, MN.

A rosary will be said at 4:30 p.m. Thursday at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, where the family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. and a vigil service will be held at 7 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Holy Trinity Endowment or the DMARC Food Pantry.
