Walter "Walt" Schlievert, 86, died Friday January 9, 2009, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center of heart failure.

Walt was born October 4, 1922, in Ames, Iowa, the son of Charles and Olga Schlievert. He graduated from Humboldt High School and served three years as a U.S. Marine in the South Pacific during WWII. After the service he returned to Humboldt and married Garnet Skaugstad on September 15, 1946. They moved to Des Moines in 1952. Walt was a master plumber and worked as an independent plumbing contractor and later for the West Des Moines school district.

Walt was active in his church serving as an usher and elder. He also spent many volunteer hours serving Iowa Lutheran Hospital and Hospice of Central Iowa. He was an avid reader and golfer.

Walt is survived by Garnet, his wife of 62 years; five children, Scott (Sarah) Schlievert, of Tucson, AZ, Suzanne Jackson, of Shelton, WA, Sara (Lars Peterson) Schlievert, of West Des Moines, Stuart (Betty) Schlievert, of Des Moines, and Stephanie (Jeff) Pavlik, of Geneva, IL; twelve grandchildren, Lindsey, Tory, Brooke, Adam, Matthew (Jessica), Riley, Ali, Evan, Cullen, Madeline, Courtney, and Ben; three step-grandchildren, Carole, Julie, and Lauri; and a large extended family. He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers.

A memorial service celebrating his life will be held Saturday, January 17, 2009, 11 a.m., at St. John's Lutheran Church in Des Moines. A memorial visitation will be held Friday at Iles Funeral Homes - Dunn's Chapel at 2121 Grand Avenue with family present from 5 to 7 p.m. A private family burial will be held at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to St. John's Lutheran Church, Hospice of Central Iowa, or Living History Farms. ~ The Des Moines (IA) Register, Tues 13 Jan 2009.
