R.W. "Bill" Vranich, 86, passed from this life on Wednesday, September 26, 2012, at his home in West Des Moines.

Bill was born on July 9, 1926, in Moran, Iowa to Michael and Josephine (Svetlecich) Vranich. Bill was a veteran of the U.S. Navy. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and the Croatian Fraternal Slavic Center. Bill married Marie Book on April 21, 1951, and they made their home in the Des Moines area. He was employed for 42 years with Consumer Lumber Company, retiring in 1989. Bill had a passion and talent for woodworking, with family and friends, as well as Sacred Heart Church and St. Ambrose Cathedral benefiting from that talent.

Bill is survived by his wife, Marie of West Des Moines; two daughters, Catherine (Dennis) Whitlatch of Waukee and Patricia Henderson of Des Moines; son, Stephen (Tracie) Vranich of New Ulm, MN; five grandchildren, Tony Whitlatch, Jennifer Henderson, John, Gage and Emma Vranich; and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Charles and Emil.

Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 p.m., followed by a 4 p.m. Vigil Service, on Sunday, September 30, at Iles Funeral Homes-Westover Chapel. A Funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, October 1, 2012, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 1627 Grand Avenue, West Des Moines, Iowa. Burial will be at Resthaven Cemetery in West Des Moines following the service. Memorial contributions may be made to The American Diabetes Association or Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
