VERNIS KRAMER

HAVELOCK -- Vernis "Vern" Kramer, age 79, of Havelock, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 7, 2008, at the Spencer Municipal Hospital in Spencer.

Funeral service is 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 11, 2008, at the Resurrection of Our Lord Catholic Church in Pocahontas, with Fr. Merle Kollasch and Fr. Dennis Sefcik officiating. Burial is in Calvary Cemetery in Pocahontas with military rites by the Havelock AmVets. Visitation is4 to 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 10, at the Powers Funeral Home in Pocahontas, with Rosary at 5 p.m. and a parish vigil service at 7 p.m.

Vernis Lawrence Kramer was born April 20, 1929, at Carroll. He was the son of Bernard and Marie (Ocken) Kramer. He attended Maple River Grade School. In 1942, he moved with his family to Pocahontas and graduated from Sacred Heart High School in 1947. He served in the U.S. Army from 1951 through 1953. He worked as a farm hand and other jobs until 1961 when he purchased a farm near Havelock. On July 26, 1991, Vernis married Marjorie Schmalen Gambell at SS Peter and Paul Catholic Church in West Bend. The couple settled near Havelock.

Vernis was a member of the Resurrection of Our Lord Catholic Church and AmVets. He enjoyed dancing, playing cards, fishing and woodworking.

Survivors include his wife, Marjorie Kramer; step-children, Roger (Connie) Gambell, Tom (Jenny) Gambell, Brian (Jackie) gambell and Karen (Bill) Hoskins all of West Bend and Larry (Katie) Gambell of Spencer; 16 step-grandchildren; sisters, Ruth Reis of Pocahontas and Linda (Dick) Wirges of Valley, Neb.; brothers, Leon (Gladys) Kramer of Pomeroy; Kenneth (Marlene) Kramer of Alta; Loren (Barbara) Kramer of Fort Dodge; Robert (Mariam) Kramer of Storm Lake; Ben Jr. (Fran) Kramer; Jerry Kramer; and John (Sandi) Kramer all of Pocahontas; and Mike (Pauline) Kramer of Cherokee; and many nieces and nephews.

Vernis was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Eugene.
