Funeral Services held Saturday for Matthew Donahue

Matthew Anthony Donahue passed away Thursday, January 22 at the Americana Healthcare Center at Mason City at the age of 88 years, 5 months and 25 days. He had been a resident there since November 1978.

A Mass of the Resurrection was held on Saturday morning, January 24 at Sacred Heart Church, of Laurens with Father W. L. Bruch as celebrant. Legion of Mary Rosary services were held at 4 p.m. Friday and a parish rosary was held at 7:30, both at the Smith Funeral Chapel.

Mrs. Florence Pohlman was organist for the service. Dennis Larson was soloist. Pall bearers were Dale Larson, Jack Donahue, Frank Bringleson, Lowell Anderson, Charles Coldren and Mike Rigby. Burial was in Calvary Cemetery near Laurens with the Smith Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Matthew Anthony Donahue

Matthew Anthony Donahue, the son of John and Leucinda Donahue, was born July 27, 1898 at Reynolds, Indiana. The Donahue family moved from their native Indiana to a farm in Illinois, before moving to the Pocahontas area. He was united in marriage to the former Elva Mather on February 12, 1924 in services at the Sacred Heart Rectory in Pocahontas. They farmed in the Pocahontas area before moving to a farm near Laurens. Upon retirement the Donahues moved into Laurens, where Elva died in 1966.

Mr. Donahue was a member of the Sacred Heart Church of Laurens. He was also a Past Grand Knight of Father Ahlers Council #3140, Knights of Columbus.

He is survived by a daughter, Shirley, Mrs. Robert Berry of Mason City and four grandchildren.

Mr. Donahue was preceded in death by his wife, a son Gene Matthew in infancy, his parents, a sister, Lillian and four brothers, James, Tom, Ed and John.
